If voters in Scotland had fallen asleep after the General Election in 2005 and only just woke up this morning they would have probably been totally unaware that another election had just taken place as none of the seats in Scotland changed last night ( except those lost in bi-elections, they were regained ).
At least some of the political pundits seem surprised by this outcome but a little thought makes it perfectly understandable. There are two possible reasons for neither the Scottish National Party ( SNP ) or the Liberal Democrats ( LibDems ) making any progress. First is the fact that the Scots remember the way the Conservatives foisted the Poll Tax on them, using the scots as guinea pigs for a very unpopular tax so they presumably saw a vote for the Labour party as a way of stopping the Conservatives getting into power.
The other reason may be that there was talk of the LibDems doing something similar with ( i think it was ) immigration.
The result in Scotland then makes much more sense.
