How stupid ar professional footballers - and those selected as football 'pundits'?
The 2010 World Cup Finals had hardly begun when they showed how little they actually know about football. The first example occurred with the host nation, South Africa, leading 1-0. A South African player was looking as though he would make it 2-0 when he was put to the ground by an opposing player. Immediately the 'pundit' with the commentator said that "no way was it a penalty".
It was a typical comment from a former player as they often come out with the completely wrong statement that "football is a contact sport". If they check the rules they will find that the only contact allowed is shoulder to shoulder, anything else is illegal. That is why in the example above it should have been a penalty to South Africa, as the defender not only pulled the player's arm but also pushed him down.
The, so called, football experts were at it again during the Germany v Serbia game when a German player committed a couple of fouls and was warned by the referee about his future behaviour. When he was then booked and sent off for two further fouls the 'experts' were up in arms, citing the referee's decisions as controversial, when all he had done was follow the rules of the game.
What these ex-players should remember is that it was they who only a decade or so were very critical of the foreign players who used the cynical tactics that they now think are acceptable in the game.
