The Trades Union Congress ( TUC ) is meeting this week and the main item on the agenda appears to be a call for concerted strike action against the government's financial cutbacks. But the question has to be asked, Why?
People are already going to lose their jobs because of these necessary cutbacks ( Labour would have had to have made cutbacks too ) so to strike and put even more jobs at risk through the companies involved losing more business and therefore income, is just madness.
A quick look back through history shows that whatever party is in government the UK goes through both good and bad times with recessions scattered here and there. It is part of life.
Where the big problem lies is with the working population themselves as they fail to prepare for the bad times. When things are good and jobs and money are plentiful they spend to their limit and max out their credit cards so that when the downturn comes they have no leeway in their financies to cope with it. But of course it is not their fault it is the government's.
A great example of what i'm saying is house buying. If someone can afford to buy a house for £250,000 with money left over they won't buy that property they will spend all they have and more to get an even bigger property.
So rather than putting more workers jobs in jeopardy the TUC should use it's power to educate it's members and everyone else on how better to plan for not only the good times but the bad ones as well.
In case anyone thinks that this is a backing for the Tory led government i can say honestly that i have never ever voted Tory either locally or nationally.
